Oh my gosh, if you haven’t been to Gatlinburg, TN you need to make it a priority. Gatlinburg was the perfect romantic anniversary getaway. But Gatlinburg could also be a wonderful, fun filled family vacation. We went to Gatlinburg for our one year anniversary in November 2015 and very soon we will be celebrating 3 years of wedded bliss [and by wedded bliss I mean bickering sometimes but most of the time wedded bliss 😉]. If you have a chance to pick what time of year to go I would highly recommend one of the fall months. We went in the middle of November and they already had Christmas décor up [which made my OCD (obsessive Christmas disorder) heart very happy]. So, stay tuned below I’m sharing the “must see” spots for your next getaway in Gatlinburg, TN.
Our hotel was so perfect. It was about a half mile walk from downtown Gatlinburg so we could walk to they city everyday and burn off some of those vacay calories. The hotel room had a balcony that we sat on every morning and enjoyed the sound of the river flowing by. The weather was so beautiful that time of year we pretty much had the door open for our entire stay. I would highly recommend staying at Baymont Inn when you come to Gatlinburg, TN.
I was terrified to go on the Sky Lift the first time because I hate heights, but once we went the first time I was hooked. Being Floridians born and raised we just enjoyed how relaxing it was to watch the mountain scenery from that high up. The temperature was perfect it was low 70’s, high 60’s during the day and it dipped down to the lower 60’s at night and we just ate up every little second of cool weather we could get. The sky lift costs $16 per adult for one ride or $18 and you can ride it an unlimited amount of times a day. We ended up purchasing the unlimited tickets because we were obsessed! Also, once you get to the top they have an amazing lookout where they have picnic tables so you can sit down and enjoy the view some more.
This was not my first time Zip-lining but this Zip-line Park was amazing. The mountains were even more breathtaking with some of the trees already turned beautiful orange and yellow colors. Our guide was great and seemed to enjoy his job which always makes things more enjoyable! This zip-lining park was also in Pigeon Forge but it was most definitely worth the drive.
Dixie Stampede is one of the coolest shows and it is so well done. Even if you’re not a horse person this should be on your list of shows to see while visiting Gatlinburg. Dixie Stampede is located in Pigeon Forge but one of the things that makes Gatlinburg so great is the proximity of the two cities. If you get bored of Gatlinburg its a quick drive to Pigeon Forge where there is a quite a bit to do. They have a ton of shopping in Pigeon Forge. When you get to Dixie Stampede, before the main show they take professional pictures and then you head into a concert hall. Once inside the concert hall you can order drinks in adorable boot shaped cups and listen to a band play.
This wasn’t so much a romantic dinner but it was absolutely hilarious. If you have never been to a Dick’s Last Resort restaurant they “serve you with sarcasm”. So just to give you a little insight into what that looks like, when we sat down the waitress threw our silverware on the table and said “what do you want?”. They put these hats on you and try to make them as embarrassing as possible and if you take the hat off they will make fun of you. If you don’t like being made fun of I definitely wouldn’t recommend this restaurant but if you can roll with it I promise you will have a good time!
Gatlinburg Hiking Trails/NC.-TN. State Line
There are quite a few different hiking trails in Gatlinburg and if you want to get outside, get some exercise, and enjoy the scenery that TN has to offer than any of the hiking trails will work. We ended up on the “Gatlinburg Trail Trailhead” and it was beautiful. Once we were done with our walk we just started driving into the mountains deeper because we wanted to stop at some look-out points for pictures and we ended up in North Carolina! The drive was so relaxing after our hike and by the time we made it up to the North Carolina, Tennessee State line it was so cold [40 something degrees] we did not have enough layers to keep us warm, so bring a couple jackets if you go in November!
Romantic Dinner Idea: Calhoun’s Restaurant – We enjoyed Calhoun’s Restaurant. The food was yummy and the atmosphere was very romantic. They had the lights dimmed and our table was right beside a fireplace. If you like BBQ and steak than Calhoun’s would be a perfect dinner spot.
Amusement Park: Dollywood – We [unfortunately] ran out of time and didn’t get to go to Dollywood but I have heard amazing things about Dollywood!
